1. Section 107 and Section 151 of the Code of Criminal Procedure
- Section 107 of the Criminal Procedure Code states that the executive magistrate has the power to apprehend any individual for not more than a year on information that a person is likely to disturb peace and public tranquility.
- Section 151 empowers the police to arrest a person, without a warrant, whom they believe, may commit a cognizable offence. There are certain conditions laid down under Section 151 with regard to the arrest, like
- The commission of an offence that is anticipated by the police must be a cognizable one and
- it appears that the anticipated offence shall only be prevented by arrest.
2. Course of Yamuna River
- It originates from the Yamnotri glacier on the Bandarpunch Peak in the Garhwal region in Uttarakhand at an elevation of about 6,000 meters.
- It cuts across the Nag Tibba, the Mussoorie and the Shiwalik ranges.
- It emerges out of the hilly area and enters plains near
- Its main affluent in the upper reaches is the Tons which also rises from the Bandarpunch glacier.
- It joins Yamuna below Kalsi before the latter leaves the hills.
- he catchment of Yamuna river system covers parts of Uttar Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh & Delhi states.
3. 8 Year Citizenship Path in USA
- U.S. President-elect Joe Biden plans to unveil a sweeping immigration bill on Day One of his administration, hoping to provide an eight-year path to citizenship for an estimated 11 million people living in the country without legal status, a massive reversal from the Trump administration’s harsh immigration policies.
- It provides one of the fastest pathways to citizenship for those living without legal status of any measure in recent years.
4. Darfur Region
- Darfur is a region of the western Sudan.
- D?r is an Arabic word meaning "home".
- The region was named Dardaju while ruled by the Daju, who migrated from Meroë c. 350 AD, and it was renamed Dartunjur when the Tunjur ruled the area.
- Darfur was an independent sultanate for several hundred years until it was incorporated into Sudan by Anglo-Egyptian forces in 1916.
- Because of the War in Darfur between Sudanese government forces and the indigenous population, the region has been in a state of humanitarian emergency since 2003.
5. Parakram Divas
- The Government of India recently announced that the birth anniversary of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose is to be celebrated as “ParakramDiwas”. ParakramDiwas means Courage Day. Netaji was born on January 23, 1897.
- The Central Government and the Bengal Government are to begin the year long celebrations of 125th birth anniversary year on January 23, 2021.
6. S-400
- The S-400 Triumf is a mobile, surface-to-air missile system (SAM) designed by Russia.
- It is the most dangerous operationally deployed modern long-range SAM (MLR SAM) in the world, considered much ahead of the US-developed Terminal High Altitude Area Defense system (THAAD).
- It can simultaneously track numerous incoming objects — all kinds of aircraft, missiles and UAVs — in a radius of a few hundred kilometres and launch appropriate missiles to neutralise them.
7. Neighbourhood First Policy of India
- The neighbourhood first policy of Modi government actively focuses on improving ties with India'simmediate neighbours.
- It is one of the major policy initiatives of the Modi government to bring back thefocus on its immediate neighbourhood in South Asia.
- Modi invited all the SAARC leaders to his swearing-in ceremony and on the subsequent day he heldbilateral talk with all of them individually which is called as “Mini SAARC”
8. Amendment to the Panchayati Raj Act by the State of Haryana
- According to the amendment, all wards are to be sequentially numbered viz. odd and even for the purposes of reservation of seats.
- Also, as per amended sub sections (3) and (6) of Sections 9, 59 and 120, the posts of Sarpanch, Members and Chairman falling in even numbered wards have been reserved for women — falling in both categories viz. reserved and general.
- In so far as the odd numbered wards are concerned, the Act provides that “persons other than women” can contest from such wards.”
- The term “persons other than woman” has not been defined under the amendment and would logically include males and transgenders and exclude women.
- The amendment thus restricts women candidates from contesting from odd numbered wards which are otherwise open or general wards.
9. AarogyaSetu App
- India launched AarogyaSetu mobile App to augment the efforts of limiting the spread of Covid-19.
- It has an objective of enabling bluetooth based contact tracing and mapping of likely hotspots and dissemination of relevant information about Covid-19.
- Although the app has been resourceful by its users, there were privacy concerns regarding the lack of transparency in the app's code.
- To address these concerns, the government has decided to launch the code-set of the app on GitHub to make it more transparent.
