A passenger bus service was started for the first time after India’s Independence in Swabhiman Anchal region in Odisha’s Malkangiri district.
It was previously known as ‘Bichhinnanchal’ or cut-off area.
The region is situated along the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border.
The region had long been a stronghold of left-wing extremists.
Over 150 villages got road connection to mainland Odisha in 2018 with the opening of the Gurupriya bridge.
The area remained encircled by water on three sides after the construction of reservoirs at Machhkund in the 1960’s and another side by inhospitable terrain.
Balimera Reservoir is also situated in the region.
