Gulf Stream
· The Gulf Stream, a current in the middle of the Atlantic, at the level of the equator.
· The surface layer of water, heated by the Sun, moves north along the east coast of North America towards Greenland.
· During this long journey, it slowly loses its heat through evaporation, which consequently means that its salt content increases.
· At the Grand Banks, it branches, one current moving eastwards as the
· North Atlantic Drift, the other turning south-east back towards the mid Atlantic.
· On reaching the Labrador Sea, however, it descends under the ice, because of its higher density.
· So this mid-Atlantic current, now cold, travels south following the bottom of the Atlantic Ocean until it reaches Antarctica, where it grows even colder.
· On the way, it is enriched by water flowing out of the Mediterramean.
· This water, denser because it is richer in salt, passes under the Atlantic surface waters, giving rise to another current at medium depth.
